Hello Friends! I just wanted to share some photographs I took of Snowflakes here in Iowa a few weeks ago! I was doing some research a year or so ago about photographing snowflakes after I saw some beautiful flakes that had been photographed here on the web. I read all about how one must have a microscope attachment thing for a DSLR lens in order to capture the snowflakes. I didn’t have one of those microscope things, so I decided to see what I could capture with my 100mm macro lens! Turns out…it was quite magical to capture the snowflakes here in Iowa even without a microscope thingy!! They say every single snowflake is unique…and that is beyond fascinating to me!! I will never look at a snowfall again the same…never! I hope this blog helps you see the beauty in the snowflakes in Iowa as well!
A whole bunch of flakes that had fallen, with a few individual flakes visible.
These photos were taken with my 5D Markii, 100mm lens, and I cropped the heck out of the images in Photoshop in order to see the flakes more clearly! I couldn’t be more pleased with the way they turned out! The bright colors are actually just a rad rug I picked up at a thrift store for my living room!
Purple is one of my favorite colors…and the flakes accent the rug nicely!
In order to get as close as possible to these snowflakes in Iowa I was manually focusing with my lens. This means I would brace myself against something and move my body to focus. With such a tiny subject and a small depth of field…I took hundreds of photos in order to get a few ‘gems’ in focus on my camera.
The above image is one of my favorites! This is definitely snowflake partner yoga! 😉
Many people I share these images with say ‘I didn’t know snowflakes really looked like that?’ or ‘Wow, they look like Christmas ornaments!’ I used to think the same thing! So much magic in Mother Nature!!
Perfection
These flakes often hang on by a tiny thread. It’s beyond me how Mother Nature creates such magic!!
This flake is partially melted…and it’s so BEAUTIFUL!!
This one was camera shy…hiding behind it’s neighbors!
This is also one of my favorites!! I often look at these and think to myself ‘Holy shit…I took these?’!!
White on Black with a splash of turquoise!
Often snowflakes fall in clumps from the sky. After learning the beauty of these snowflakes here in Iowa last year I have been studying each snowfall in search of the perfect flakes to photograph! When it snows, I’ll go outside and look closely as the flakes fall onto my black coat. I used to look out the window and think the huge flakes falling would be perfect for photographing, only to realize they weren’t huge flakes. Instead, they were many small flakes clumped into one. Snowflakes are simply fascinating!
King of the Blue Mountain! 🙂
This flake must have tried to borrow an appendage of a different flake?! 😉
Thank you SOOO much for taking the time to check out this blog post! I am always waiting for the perfect flakes for photographing…I will continue to photograph Snowflakes In Iowa as long as I live here!!! And of course, I’ll share with you all so you can continue to find the beauty in all of this crazy winter snow!
One day a few months ago I was outside checking out the type of flakes that were falling when these beautiful words just came thru me. I came inside quickly to make sure I got them written down. I’m not much of a ‘writer’, which makes it even more awesome that the following came thru me in what I call ‘automatic writing’. Enjoy!
‘Like a snowflake, each one of us unique & magnificent. The wind collides us into others during our journeys, Beautifully broken as we gravitate to earth. When we have fallen, we continue to reflect light onto all. Just when we think the journey is over, we transform into water…the softest, yet most powerful substance on the planet & begin another journey. Let’s fall & light up the universe.’ ~KaYLyN HoSKiNs
Pretty cool, huh? I appreciate you taking the time out of your day to view Mother Nature’s Magic, captured by ME! 🙂
